Artisanal and SmallScale Mining (ASM) is a global economic phenomenon that is widespread especially in developing countries. It provides livelihoods for millions of people, yet is often primarily associated with environmental and social problems.
However, smallscale miners are confined to making very low profit margins. Evidently, small scale mining entrepreneurs do not start a smallscale mining enterprise to become wealthy, but rather to be able to provide food for their families. Small scale mining entrepreneurs are interested in making a basic livelihood, not in becoming rich.
